Read full description of the books:
The good thing about Shiomi Chika’s series is that while there is so much backstory and lead-in to her plot lines, she does cut to the point fairly quickly and starts answering questions as soon as she can/ And especially with Yukarism being only four volumes long, I liked that we do get start to see some questions answered—I think that we’re not going to learn who murdered Yumurasaki until the very end, but at least we have more exploration in her relationships with Kazuma and Shizuka, and how that affects the present day relationships between Yukari, Katsuhiko and Mahoro.
As I mentioned in volume 2, I like that despite clearly rubbing each other wrong way (and their prior lives’ emotions getting in the way of things), Katsuhiko and Mahoro are dedicated to stopping whatever onslaught the spirits’ they possess are preparing to unleash to the best of their abilities. I think it would have been easy for Shizuka and Kazuma to respectively continue to take hold of their hosts throughout the series, warping their personalities, but I like that both Katsuhiko and Mahoro are able to hold those emotions for some time. (Although I do want an all-out fight in the last volume—I don’t want either party to die, I just think that this needs to be paid off.)
We also finally learn the history that Yumurasaki has with both Kazuma and Shizuka, as well as their respective backstories. (view spoiler)[And I do like that we do have evidence that Yumurasaki is Kazuma’s sister, he’s still not entirely sure, but still feels the need to keep protecting her. It’s a minor detail that I do really like about the story. (hide spoiler)] The only thing that I don’t like as much with the backstory dance is just that we’re largely getting it in exposition flashbacks, with Yukari in Yumurasaki’s body admitting that he’s from the future and needing to know what happened between Yumurasaki and Shizuka. It’s not bad, but it just does feel a little ploddy at times, and I think that it could have been streamlined a little more.
But largely, the back-and-forth works for me, because we’re still unsure of the main mystery of the series, and I like that even in the penultimate volume, we still don’t know the truth. I really like that it’s unclear if Shizuka or Kazuma killed Yumurasaki and that there’s potential reasons why they both could have done it. (Especially with the revelation that Yumurasaki has an unknown ailment that’s beginning to affect Yukari in the present day.) And the mystery is definitely keeping me on my toes, and makes me interested in what’s going to happen in the final volume in a few months. I’ve really enjoyed this series so far, and I’m really excited to finally read the endgame.
